Help with a Sentence (側?、点数をとる?)

Postby Dariat » April 10th, 2011 9:53 am

The following is a sentence from a magazine:
勉強自体はすごい好きなんで、やる気もすごいあるんです。だけど勉強側があまり好きになってくれなくて……点数とか全然とれないんです。

I can't figure out if the person likes or does not like studying. First she's saying she does, but then again not really? What does 側 mean (I looked it up, but I don't understand how the meaning fits in here)?

About the last part: She cannot get grades at all? Does she mean 'good grades'?

Some help would be appreciated.

From my interpretation, the gist of it is:
"I like studying, but studying doesn't like me (in return)" :)

It seems like she's making a joke because while she likes studying and has the motivation, she doesn't get good grades (点数がとれない), so she says that studying doesn't like her. (The 好きになってくれない hints that what she's talking about doesn't like HER, and not that she herself doesn't something.)

Ah, it all suddenly seems so clear.

In Japanese I often get confused about who's the subject and who's the object of the action described, although the word くれる should have ticked me off here. Now I also understand how 側 fits in here.

Thank you very much for clearing that up. :)
