A question about gozaimasu

A question about gozaimasu

I have heard both "arigatou gozaimasu" and "arigatou gozaimashita". Is there any usage difference between them, or are they basically the same?

Thanks for your time. (I would say it in Japanese if I knew which way to end it :P )

One is non-past and the other is past.

I realize that, but I am not sure about where I would use which. Would I only use "gozaimasu" for something that the helper has not done yet, or is doing? I am sure I have heard it as a slightly-afterward thank you...

This doesn't answer your question, but in Japanese, arigatou gozaimasu is not used for something that the helper has not done yet. For that, use yoroshiku onegai shimasu or similar. Both arigatou gozaimasu and arigatou gozaimashita can be used for finished requests.
