iwade-shi Wakayama

Just as a by-the-way romaji is perfectly understandable and usable by the postal services in Japan. You don't have to write the address in Kanji.

Of course, and you could write it in Tategaki too, it could look very nice.

Unless you muck it up and your letter is delayed or goes astray.
Clarity might be more important than the gesture of writing kanji if you aren't sure about the kanji or aren't practised in writing them.
I'm just saying that it's something you don't actually have to worry about if sending a letter to Japan.
