I've heard the use of shita+ mae several times, for example "yameta mae" which means "stop". how exactly and when should I use this form?

it's tamae, and it can just be slapped onto any 'masu stem'. It's a command, and it's pretty authoritative. Not recommended for use by beginners unless you're joking around.
