amari/anmari -- what's the difference?

Postby amost » October 13th, 2009 1:54 pm

Anywhere will tell you what amari/anmari means, but my question is why choose 1 over the other?

Is it random, like whichever pops into your mind first?

Does one have a different nuance than the other?

Do different types of poeple use them?

Does it vary by region?

All/none of the above?

...just wondering :) thanks!

Technically, the correct form is 「あまり」, but now it seems to be used more often in writing and formal speech. I think in everyday situations people usually use あんまり.
