How does ha become wa?

Postby JesterDev » October 12th, 2009 9:33 am

Thought I had all this figered out untill I ran into こんにちは & こんばんは.
In the iphone app human Japanese thats how konnichi wa and konban wa are spelled. Maybe a typo or is that correct? Shouldn't wa be わ?

Those are both being used as particles. If you break the words up you can understand it easier:

Kon nichi wa is an impartial sentence sort of like saying "this day is".
Konban wa is similar, like saying "this night is".

How does the word "of" become pronounced "uv" ? Shouldn't it be spelled with a "v" instead of an "f" ?

It's just something that you have to get used to ;)

Our Professor for Japanese Literature in Waka Haiku and such told us, in old Japanese those things were pronounced as ha too, just in the modern Japanase it transformed to this.

the important thing you have to understand is, a わ you will rarely see seperate and a は only is used as wa when used as particle ... at least if I remebered that right ^^
