Short duration Japanese courses

Postby typerlc » July 15th, 2006 2:08 pm

I'm holidaying in Japan for a short time starting Oct 06. A few years ago I spent quite a bit of time traveling around Sth America, and really benefited from (and enjoyed) doing a week long intensive Spanish course (6 days, 6 hrs per day).

My current plans are to spend about 10 days riding around Shikoku. I'll probably spend a week or two before this in Osaka or Kyoto. And after Shikoku I might travel to Okinawa for a week.

Can anyone suggest schools in Osaka or perhaps Kyoto which provide short (1 week) study options? By the time I travel, I'll have spent a few months studying Japanese (just 2hr classes, plus own study per week), so I'm not exactly a beginner, but not very advanced either.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions!

Your best bet is to get a private teacher. There are schools such as YMCA, but I believe that most operate on a fixed-schedule basis.

If you google for "Kansai Flea Market" there are a usually an abundance of ads in there for private Japanese teachers. The rate is often 2000-3000 yen/hour, but if you"re looking for an intensive course (i.e. a few hours a day) I'm sure you could haggle them down. There are also some private ads for the Kansai area in the "Kansai Time Out" and "Japanzine", I believe, so you might want to google for those too.
