Helpful Skype phrases

Postby kuronekogrrl » December 28th, 2008 1:29 pm

Hi all!
Now i know this might be sentence mining but I would like it if i could get some help on this plz! I just want to know how to say a couple of simple phrases in japanese to make speaking to my japanese friend over skype easier. If someone could translate this to romanji that would be awesome! Ok, here goes;

How to say;
"too fast?" (inferring to a sentence i just spoke)
"too complex (or difficult)?" (inferring to a sentence i just spoke)
"would you like me to say it slower?" (inferring to a sentence i just spoke)
"would you like me to say it simpiler (or less complex)?" (inferring to a sentence i just spoke)
"do you understand?" (inferring to a sentence i just spoke)
"that was good!" (referring to the sentence he just spoke, ie, he has good english)

Advance thanks to anyone who posts! :D

Well, my Japanese isn't amazing, but I know how to say a couple of those things:

kuronekogrrl wrote:"do you understand?" (inferring to a sentence i just spoke)

Hiragana: わかりますか? -- Romaji: Wakarimasu ka? (understand [question marker]?)

kuronekogrrl wrote:"that was good!" (referring to the sentence he just spoke, ie, he has good english)

Hiragana: いいですよ!-- Romaji: Ii desu yo! (good is [emphasis]!)
I'm slightly unsure about this one, but I'm 99% sure it'd be okay (my main concern is whether or not "yo" would be an appropriate thing to use - I'm not sure how it's affected by politeness levels).

To: Japanese speakers more well versed in the language than I: would でした be better over です? (I figure that if what you're referring to JUST took place, than です would be just fine.)

Not sure about your intended sentences, but these are some things I might say (minus the femininity). Feel free to change the politeness/speaking style. I'm not Japanese, so I don't know if they are the most natural, but you should be able to get your message across. Try asking your friend or getting him to correct you, if you can.

わかりにくいの?
Is it hard to understand?
ちゃんとききとれたの?
Did you catch that okay?
わかったの?
Did you understand?
ちょっとはやすぎた?
Was that a bit too fast?
もうちょっとゆっくり言ってほしい?
Do you want me to say it a bit slower?
かんたんなえいごで言ってほしいい/言ったら(どう)?
Do you want me to say/what if I say it in simple English?
うわ、よくしってるね!
Lit: you know well.
My friend says this when I use 'big' or obscure words. Seems a bit less patronising than 'that was good', although you could say something like「じょうずだね」.

Useful ones for when you start to say something and get completely lost:
あぁ、なんでもない。
Nothing / nevermind.
気にしないでね。
Nevermind / don't worry.

Be aware that you'll need a clear rising intonation to make it clear you're asking a question, especially if you choose not to say の/ですか.

Hi Black Cat!

Here's some Romaji for you:

わかりにくいの?
Wakari-nikui no?
Is it hard to understand?

ちゃんとききとれたの?
Chanto kikitoreta no?
Did you catch that okay?

わかったの?
Wakatta no?
Did you understand?

ちょっとはやすぎた?
Chotto haya-sugita?
Was that a bit too fast?

もうちょっとゆっくり言ってほしい?
Mou chotto yukkuri itte hoshii?
Do you want me to say it a bit slower?

かんたんなえいごで言ってほしいい/言ったら(どう)?
Kantan-na eigo de itte hoshii / ittara?
Do you want me to say/what if I say it in simple English?

うわ、よくしってるね!
U-wa, yoku shitteru ne!
Lit: you know well.
My friend says this when I use 'big' or obscure words. Seems a bit less patronising than 'that was good', although you could say something like「じょうずだね」. (Jouzu da ne)

あぁ、なんでもない。
Aah, nan de mo nai.
Nothing / nevermind.

気にしないでね。
Ki ni shinaide ne.
Nevermind / don't worry.

HTH and good luck with learning Hiragana - you will see life will be a lot easier once you are able to read them. Not that I knew Japanese all too well, but here's a small recommendation: Try to learn them as soon as possible and don't stick to Romaji for too long - while it seems easier to use a "known script" for now it will make it harder to read and write Japanese in the long run... Or at least that's what I experienced!
