Honorific Forms: お+stem+になる、お+stem+で

Postby 7daytrial » August 22nd, 2008 5:57 am

How do you change the verb 吸う so that it is in honorific form?

ex:

僕の先生はタバコをお吸いになります。
My teacher smokes tobacco.

僕の先生はタバコをお吸いです。
My teacher smokes tobacco.

Is this the correct way to conjugate this verb?

Any other examples?

I can't verify usage as I'm not a native, but I can tell you that grammatically those conjugations are both correct. However, it is my understanding that such a construction wouldn't be used unless the teacher is doing you some honor by smoking the cigarettes you offered or something... 先生はいつもタバコを吸っています is perfectly polite as a simple statement of fact.

... maybe I'm the wrong person to answer this question, seeing as I don't smoke.
