皮肉っぽく, grammar help

Postby watermen » February 8th, 2008 3:57 pm

What does っぽく mean in the phrase 皮肉っぽく.

This term was mentioned in Lower Intermediate 7.

Thanks.

I was listening somewhat passively so I might have missed it, but they did have 皮肉っぽい. っぽい is something you can tack onto words and it means "ish." 赤っぽい "red-ish" オタクっぽい "nerdy," for example. Changing the い to く just makes it into an adverb.

Hope that helps!

To be honest I don't remember clearly. I think it might have been one of my Japanese textbooks, but I could have just as easily picked it up elsewhere.

っぽい was also covered in lower intermediate 37 and intermediate 82.

If you have a premium subscription, you might want to try the grammar bank in there, which is very useful, very well cross-referenced, and easy to navigate.

If you can't access it, I'd suggest 2 books : "A dictionary of basic japanese grammar" and "A dictionary of intermediate japanese grammar", both by Seiichi Makino and Michio Tsutsui, published by the Japan Times. The titles are a bit of a misnomer, as "basic" means "well into intermediate" and "intermediate" measn "fairly advanced". I haven't checked properly but on the whole the first book has grammar well into JLPT 2 and the second covers JLPT 2 and 1.
You can search by either japanese and english meaning. Mine never leave my desk...

Thanks. I know the premium feature has that function. But I prefer to learn it in a linear way...I will hurry up so that I will reach lesson 37....
