Use of 'no' in a sample sentence

Hey guys, I was listening to the Beginner Lesson S2 #16 "it's not good to be the king", and there's one line that's strange to me.

今日はスッカラカンのからっけつだよ。

"スッカラカン" and "からっけつ" both are na-adjectives or nouns that mean "penniless" or "broke", so why is there a "no" in between? The translation is "I'm broke today" by the way.

In this sentence they are both nouns. The "no" makes スッカラカン act as an adjective.

すっからかんのからっけつ is an idiom, but it seems pretty rare. Only 60 google hits.

I'm surprised they'd use that in a beginner's lesson.

Daijirin lists it as their only example, which is usually a good hint for something like this.
