って?

Postby Joey » April 11th, 2007 2:15 am

There's been something thats been bugging me the last few days, Sometimes when I'm watching a J-drama it seems like sometimes people add something like って to the end of a word or sentence, but i have no idea what this means. Also I think i read somewhere that you can say "XXXって何ですか?" and that means "what does XXX mean? Is that the same usage of the って? If anyone could clear this up for me I would be extremely grateful!

Casual or informal speech for the most part
Between two nouns, って means "that is called" or "of," and the order of the nouns needs to be reversed in English.
Adelaide って machi - the city of Adelaide
Cricket って sport - the sport called cricket

For the most part, って approximates "is said" in various settings.
quoting someone, abbreviates といって "so it is said" or "did you say?"
roughly the same as ついて (might even be an abbreviation) "speaking of"
After a verb, in some circumstances "even if"
