Translation widget in OSX

Postby erawanet » April 3rd, 2007 7:14 am

Anyone had positive experiences using the translation widget in OSX for Jap-Eng Eng-Jap? Seems to be okay in European languages (though I am no expert) I wonder how good it is in Japanese?
I note the number of mac afficienados in the forum so maybe many will know where I am coming from!

A quick check of translating the phrase そうなんですか。 gives "So is?"

Garbage.

It uses babelfish - so it is not really accurate.
I don't know about japanese, but it is OK for some languages - by 'OK' I mean that you get engrish ;) it requires some interpretation

JEDict is pretty good too... I only have Panther, so I don't know how the widgets are.

Generally, it's a fact of life that the more complex you make the entry in a electronic dictionary, the worse the results will be.

Essentially, stick to one word entries or short idiomatic phrases, but keep in mind that at the end of the day, you always need at least two dictionaries--one to look up stuff, and the other to verify the accuracy of the first...

A widget using Jim Breen's JDIC would be very nice, don't you think?

This isn't a widget, but gives a fairly nice way to check kanji. I've used it many times, and use my own brain to translate.
