kamoshirenai

Postby metablue » February 10th, 2007 2:53 am

Can this be broken down any further? What does "kamo" mean?

For some reason I think "kamo" means "but" - "but it can't be known", but perhaps when people use kamo as "but" they're just abbrieviating kamoshirenai. Anyone know?

かも知れない. Literally, "It is unknown to me even if ... [but I wouldn't rule out the possibility]." It expresses something that is possible but not certain. "Might".
かも is the particle か plus the particle も. In modern Japanese, it is used mostly as an abbreviation of かも知れない.
