How Would You Say ... "What did she say?"

How would you say this? More in the context like ... "so, what did she say?" as in talking to a friend who was going to ask a girl out.

Also, how would you follow up with ... "she said 'yes'."

I thought maybe hanasu would be the correct verb, but I've only seen it with "to speak" as in languages, so it didn't feel right.

iu is to say. You use the particle to to mark what was said, is being said, etc. My conversational Japanese is non-existent, so the closest to so, what did she say? that I can get is what did she say?

I would translate it as kanojo wa nan to iimashita ka. However, since you're asking how they answered a question, you may mean to use the verb kotaeru, meaning to answer. In that case, it just becomes kanojo wa nan to kotaemashita ka.

Going out on a limb, she said 'yes' might be translated as hai to kotaemashita.

And you were right about hanasu. I think it's better translated as to speak than to say.

なん　と　いった？　(nan to itta?) Is a pretty good way. The topic is going to be pretty obvious, so drop it. Since you're talking to a friend, you'd probably drop the polite conjugation as well. You'll hear 'na to itta?' a lot in movie and tv show. A lot of times it's used in shock like, "What did you just say to me?" The intonation should make it clear what you mean.
