| Marky: And I am back in the studio with the lovely Nozomi here to talk to you about Aomori-Ben again. This is our second lesson, right? |
| Nozomi: はい。 |
| Marky: Nozomi? |

| Nozomi: いいえ、実はふたつあるんです。Actually there are two kinds of dialects. 津軽弁and 南部弁 |
| Marky: And which one do you speak? |
| Nozomi: I use 津軽弁 |
| Marky: I want our listeners to know about the context that dialect is used in Japan. In Tokyo, I don’t hear a lot of dialect. |
| Nozomi: そうですね。 |
| Marky: In Aomori, where are people using dialect? |
| Nozomi: Everyone uses it. Actually at home, at school or even at the restaurant. |
| Marky: So when you order dinner at the restaurant, you might be speaking in Aomori ben? |
| Nozomi: Yes. |
| Marky: And you said, you use it in school. Do you write your papers like reports and those kind of – like official documents. |
| Nozomi: No I don’t. |
| Marky: You never write it. |
| Nozomi: Yes. |
| Marky: Okay do you use it in Tokyo at all? |
| Nozomi: No I don’t use it in Tokyo. |
| Marky: In Tokyo, let’s imagine you meet another person from Aomori, will you speak to them in Aomori-Ben or in standard Japanese? |
| Nozomi: If I meet people from Aomori, I will use 津軽弁. |
| Marky: All right. Very interesting. So in today’s story, we have two characters from Aomori. Can you introduce them? |
| Nozomi: Tomokoさんと、Isami君です。 |
| Marky: Okay so Tomoko and Isami and what is Isami doing today? |
| Nozomi: He is looking for a gift for his mother. |
| Marky: Right for her birthday and maybe Tomoko is going to help him. Let’s find out what happens here. |
| 友子: お、どしちゃー?何しちゅんず? |
| 勇: わ、かっちゃの誕生日プレゼント買わねばまいね。 |
| 友子: んだが。せば一緒に探してけら。これどんだ? |
| 勇: なんぼ?3000円が。たけえな、どすべ? |
| 友子: へばこれは? |
| 勇: そいはいぐねな。あ、どすべ、どすべ・・・ |
| 友子: わいー!かちゃくちゃね!おめはやぐ決めろじゃ!どんだんず! |

| 友子: お、どしちゃー?何しちゅんず? |

| I have to buy a gift for my mother’s birthday. |
| 友子: んだが。せば一緒に探してけら。これどんだ? |
| Oh yeah, in that case, I will help you look. How is this one? |
| 勇: なんぼ?3000円が。たけえな、どすべ? |
| How much is it? ¥3000, it’s expensive. What should I do? |
| 友子: へばこれは? |
| Then how about this one? |
| 勇: そいはいぐねな。あ、どすべ、どすべ・・・ |
| That’s not any good. What should I do? What should I do? |
| 友子: わいー!かちゃくちゃね!おめはやぐ決めろじゃ! |
| Jesus, you are getting on my nerves. Hurry up and decide. |

| Nozomi: 今日の会話はおもしろかったですね。Isami君は早くお母さんの誕生日プレゼントを決めないといけませんね。 |
| Marky: So Isami has to decide on a present soon. What do you think about Tomoko’s attitude? |
| Nozomi: Tomokoさんは、少し失礼ですね。 |
| Marky: Yeah she is a little rude maybe. Oh yeah, let’s jump in today’s grammar, okay. |
| Nozomi: はい。 |
| Marky: Okay our first Aomori dialect word is |
| Nozomi: どしちゃ？ |
| Marky: What does this mean in standard Japanese? |
| Nozomi: ひさしぶりね。 |
| Marky: And that is like long time no see or how have you been, something like that. |
| Nozomi: Yes both are okay. |
| Marky: Next term, this is very Aomori. |
| Nozomi: 何しちゅんず？ |
| Marky: Yes there is that ずsound. |
| Nozomi: Yes Aomori-Ben is famous for ず. So it’s called ズーズー弁. |
| Marky: Is this a polite name for Aomori-Ben or is it a little rude or is there any meaning? |
| Nozomi: No I don’t care. |
| Marky: Okay so 何しちゅんず? means |
| Nozomi: 何しているの？ It means what are you doing? |
| Marky: Okay our next word is |
| Nozomi: かっちゃ |
| Marky: And かっちゃmeans |
| Nozomi: お母さん |
| Marky: Okay now really quickly, in Aomori, the names of family members are different from standard Japanese. |
| Nozomi: Yes. |
| Marky: Okay let’s go down these quickly. Mother. |
| Nozomi: お母さん、かっちゃ |
| Marky: Father |
| Nozomi: お父さん、とっちゃ |
| Marky: Older brother. |
| Nozomi: お兄さん、にっちゃ |
| Marky: Older sister. |
| Nozomi: お姉さん、ねっちゃ |
| Marky: Grandmother. |
| Nozomi: おばあさん、ばっちゃ |
| Marky: Grandfather. |
| Nozomi: おじいさん、じっちゃ |
| Marky: And second cousin, four times removed. |
| Nozomi: えー？何それ？ |
| Marky: Actually I don’t know in English either. Okay so let’s not worry about it. The next word is |
| Nozomi: 買わねば |
| Marky: And standard form is |
| Nozomi: 買わなければ |
| Marky: Okay you have this combined with another word. |
| Nozomi: まいね |
| Marky: Which in standard Japanese is |
| Nozomi: いけない |
| Marky: Or |
| Nozomi: だめ |
| Marky: Okay and this means like a strong no. When you combine these two forms together, what’s the whole phrase? |
| Nozomi: 買わねばまいね。 |
| Marky: Which means |
| Nozomi: 買わなければならない。 |
| Marky: And in English, |
| Nozomi: I have to buy it. |
| Marky: Okay our next word is |
| Nozomi: んだが。 |
| Marky: Which means |
| Nozomi: そうなんだ。 |
| Marky: Which is like, is that true? |
| Nozomi: Yes. |
| Marky: Next word is |
| Nozomi: せば |
| Marky: What’s せば？ |
| Nozomi: それじゃ、そうすれば |
| Marky: And in English, |
| Nozomi: And then |
| Marky: Okay our next form is |

| Marky: You have this combined with another word. So what’s the full phrase? |
| Nozomi: 探してけら。 |
| Marky: In Nihongo, this is |
| Nozomi: 探してあげる。 |
| Marky: Which means |
| Nozomi: I will help you search. |
| Marky: And the next phrase. |
| Nozomi: これどんだ？ |
| Marky: And どんだ means |
| Nozomi: どうですか？ |
| Marky: So how is this? |
| Nozomi: Yes. |
| Marky: Next phrase |
| Nozomi: なんぼ？ |
| Marky: What is なんぼ？ |
| Nozomi: いくらですか？ |
| Marky: Okay which means |
| Nozomi: How much is it? |
| Marky: Okay so you can use this asking for price. |
| Nozomi: Yes. |
| Marky: Can you give us an example maybe in a restaurant. |
| Nozomi: へばなんぼ？ |
| Marky: In English |
| Nozomi: Then, how much, how much is this? |
| Marky: Next phrase. |
| Nozomi: どすべ。 |
| Marky: どすべ。 So in the first Aomori-Ben lesson, we talked about how there are a lot of these very short forms. So why are there so many short forms in Aomori-Ben? |
| Nozomi: Because it’s very cold in Aomori. So we don’t want to speak loudly. |
| Marky: It’s true right? |
| Nozomi: Yes. |
| Marky: How cold is it right now? |
| Nozomi: There is a lot of snow. |
| Marky: So what is どすべ？ |
| Nozomi: どうしよう。 |
| Marky: So this べ is very famous. |
| Nozomi: はい。 |
| Marky: Many people in Japan won’t recognize that. |
| Nozomi: はい。 |
| Marky: It’s interesting I hear you speak standard Nihongo to me and you will still use this べsometimes. |
| Nozomi: あはは、そうですね。 |
| Marky: Can you give us an example of how you mix the dialect with proper Japanese? |
| Nozomi: 一緒に行くべ。 |
| Marky: And in a Japanese textbook, this would be |
| Nozomi: 一緒に行こう。 |
| Marky: Okay so this is like volitional. Let’s go together. |
| Nozomi: はい。 |
| Marky: That is very cool I think. Okay so our next word is |
| Nozomi: いぐね。 |
| Marky: And this is |
| Nozomi: よくない。 |
| Marky: So this is negative. What’s the normal form? |
| Nozomi: いい。 |
| Marky: Okay our next phrase is |
| Nozomi: わいー。 |
| Marky: What does this mean? |
| Nozomi: もう |
| Marky: And when you are frustrated or tired of something, you can say this. |
| Nozomi: Yes, yes. |
| Marky: Okay so maybe this is very useful. This brings us to our next phrase which is |
| Nozomi: かちゃくちゃね。 |
| Marky: And what does this one mean? |
| Nozomi: むしゃくしゃするな。 |
| Marky: Which again is you are getting very frustrated. |
| Nozomi: Yes. |
| Marky: I don’t know how to translate this. |
| Nozomi: Yes it’s difficult. |
| Marky: In the translation notes, I tried you are getting on my nerves because she is tired of Isami complaining. |
| Nozomi: Yeah. |
| Marky: Okay we have to leave it at that I think. Okay next phrase. |
| Nozomi: どんだんず。 |
| Marky: どんだんず means |
| Nozomi: なんなの？ |
| Marky: Again this was difficult to translate. |
| Nozomi: Yes. |
| Marky: When she says this, again she is tired right? Did she make up her mind? Did she decide something at this point? |
| Nozomi: はい。 |
| Marky: What did she decide to do? |
| Nozomi: She decided to leave. |
| Marky: So maybe in English, this would be like fine? |
| Nozomi: Umm maybe.. |
| Marky: Like that’s enough. |
| Nozomi: Yeah, yeah. |
| Marky: もういい。 Okay something like that. So Tomoko chan decided to leave and she says |
| Nozomi: もう行ぐはんで。 |
| Marky: And what is this in standard Japanese? |
| Nozomi: もう行くから。 |
| Marky: And this is like I am out of here. |
| Nozomi: Yeah. |
| Marky: I am leaving now. |
| Nozomi: Yeah. |
| Marky: There is more. It’s like I am already gone. Okay and finally, that leaves us with |
| Nozomi: けっぱれ。 |
| Marky: And in standard Japanese |
| Nozomi: がんばって。がんばれ。 |
